Everton’s pursuit of a right-back has followed a familiar pattern this summer: extensive groundwork, multiple avenues explored, but no deal yet concluded. The position was identified as a priority. Internally, there is an acceptance that the current options lack the blend of defensive assurance and forward thrust required for how Everton want to function. The brief, therefore, has been clear - but execution has proved more complicated. David Moyes has frequently compared options put forward to Jake O’Brien, using the defender as a reference point when assessing suitability. The emphasis has been on profile - size, physicality, defensive reliability - and an ability to contribute in both boxes from set pieces. It is a framework that reflects Moyes’ broader priorities, particularly the importance he places on structure and aerial presence, and one that has ultimately narrowed the field when it comes to viable targets, making recruitment arguably more problematic than it should be. As mentioned previously, Raoul Bellanova was among the players who had been tracked. His pace and ability to carry the ball upfield have long appealed, and there is an understanding of the value he could bring in transition. However, concerns over his defensive consistency have tempered that interest. Within Moyes’ framework, reliability without the ball remains non-negotiable, and there is a feeling that Bellanova may not offer that balance. Brooke Norton-Cuffy was another opportunity that came Everton’s way earlier in the window, after holding an interest him in January. The chance to sign him was considered and attainable, but ultimately turned away by the Manager. Moyes was not convinced, and the club have shown a willingness throughout this window to walk away rather than bring in a right-back that the Manager may not play. The standout option, in terms of suitability, has been Guéla Doué at Strasbourg. Everton’s recruitment staff have been impressed by his physicality, composure and adaptability - attributes that align closely with what is being sought. Yet Strasbourg’s valuation, £40 million, has proven a significant obstacle. That figure has not only discouraged Everton but also other interested clubs. There is an additional complication: Doué favours a move to a club competing in European competition, which places Everton at a disadvantage in the current market. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s name has surfaced more than once and the player is once again being circulated. The 28-year-old is again looking to generate a move after a breakdown in his relationship with the West Ham hierarchy, having refused to feature for the club. The right-back is also likely to be left out of West Ham's squad this weekend due to the ongoing situation. His defensive qualities are well established, but any potential move would require alignment on wages and role - and, so far, there has been no meaningful progression, even after external approaches and attempts to get a move going from his agency. Ridle Baku of RB Leipzig has also been tracked and was watched last season, though interest has not advanced beyond those initial checks. At this stage, he remains part of a wider pool rather than an active target. Everton held an appreciation for Djed Spence, particularly his athleticism, ball-carrying ability and capacity to provide width from right-back - qualities that align with what the clubs transfer committee is seeking in the role. There is a belief internally that, on pure talent, he fits the bill. However, there are reservations that have so far prevented any move from advancing, and not just for Everton. Concerns around his off-field behaviour and overall consistency as a professional have been noted, with Everton placing a significant emphasis on professionalism and reliability within the squad. The deal that has moved closest is for Alistair Johnston. Everton reached an agreement with the player, and there was confidence internally that the move could be completed. However, negotiations between the clubs have stalled over a valuation gap of approximately £5 million. As things stand, that difference has prevented an agreement, though the situation is not viewed as closed. There remains scope for talks to resume, but Celtic can be a tough nut to crack. Whilst it is a position of urgency, what is evident is there has been a disciplined approach and a frustrating one. No panic buy, up to now. Everton have been active without being reactive, and Moyes has maintained a firm stance on the type of player he wants or one he will play, sometimes meaning Everton miss out on a player. The result is a process that has, at times, appeared slow - but one that reflects a deliberate attempt to avoid an immediate short-term fix. Whether that is successful or not remains to be seen. Time will tell. With time still remaining in the window, Everton’s right-back search is unresolved but ongoing. Whether an agreement with Celtic for Johnston can be met, or another option gets taken up, will likely depend on movement elsewhere in the market and on Everton finding a deal that meets both their financial parameters plus an acceptance from the Manager that he will be played, if the club are to spend the money. The process has not been easy or a smooth one. Everton's transfer committee recognise the importance of bringing in a starting right-back and, while there may be a sense of panic and concern outside the club, that urgency is not shared within. Everton do have a number of irons in the fire and are in a fair position (currently) for a number of options. However, the need and want for a right-back continues...
